One of my favorite movie characters of all time is Dory, Nemo’s royal blue Tang fish sidekick in the movie Finding Nemo. One of her best (and worst) traits is her periodic amnesia, which makes for some of the most hilarious and poignant moments in the film.
Loving an ExtraOrdinary Dog can feel a lot like starring in a scene opposite Dory. Some days your beloved pup will walk through a doorway like he’s a pro. Later the same day, he pancakes to the floor and can’t come within two feet of the same threshold.
For Katie (my shy and fearful dog) and me, one of our Dory moments centers around car rides.
The long, long process to get her to barely tolerate a car ride will be a subject for another post. To this day, actually getting into the car is never a sure thing, though. Some days she will jump in fairly quickly. On the next trip, she may throw in some avoidance behaviors like sniffing the ground, balking at the last minute or my personal fave; going selectively deaf and blind. “What car? I see no car right in front of me.” And (very rarely, thankfully) sometimes I need to gently pick her up and help her in with lots of treats for her bravery.
